Friend,
Welcome to Savage World! I also own a '96 and love it. When you say the positive came loose, do you mean the positive battery cable? If so, just retighten it til snug and it should be OK. For the battery breather tube, you should have one for excess battery acid to drain. An auto parts store should have tubing you can get to fit the battery stub, and the tube juse hangs straight down through a small clip below the battery box.
Though it'll cost you $30, I'd strongly recommend you buy the Clymer Savage manual, available from Amazon.com. Also, if you can afford it, the factory manual, about $60 through your Suzuki dealer, is very good, too. Between the Clymer and the factory books, everything you'll need to know for maintenance and/or teardown and repair will be there. The Clymer is for 1986-88, but though much of the bike hasn't changed over the years the factory book will come with all model-year supplements. Well worth the $100 for both, you won't be sorry!
Enjoy your new machine, look on this site for LOTS of info and good stuff. Tallyho!!
